Synopsis

Ima is a story about four women and three generations: grandmother, mother and two daughters... one of them Caterina Klusemann. After her father's death, this women only family moved to a remote part of Tuscany. Although the two girls attend Italian school, have Italian friends and play Italian games, at home things are completely different - a chaotic mixture of Spanish, Polish and German. Oma cooks weird dishes with names like borscht and kascha and thinks nothing of eating herring and red onion for breakfast. Apart from the four women, there are no other relatives, no great-grandparents, no aunts or uncles. In fact, there are no family stories in which any of the women appear as characters.  This personal testimony pursues a long-kept family secret, gradually and painfully unveiling it. It documents the end of a silence that ultimately was not able to prevent painful memories to permeate the present.

Ima ist die Geschichte von vier Frauen dreier Generationen: Großmutter, Mutter und zwei Töchter. Sie erzählt, wie die vier Familienmitglieder versuchen, sich ein "normales" Leben einzurichten. Ein Leben, das die Vergangenheit ausschließt.

Die Filmemacherin, eine der beiden Töchter, ist entschlossen, die Geschichte der ausgeblendeten Vergangenheit zu finden und stellt unerbittlich Fragen. So lange, bis die Großmutter und Mutter in einem schmerzhaften Prozeß ihr lang gehütetes Geheimnis preis geben.

Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt die konfliktreiche Auseinandersetzung einer Person der sogenannten "dritten" Generation mit dem Holocaust. Er dokumentiert das allmähliche Aufbrechen eines Schweigens, – das zum Schutz der Kinder gewahrt werden sollte –, aber dennoch nicht verhindern konnte, daß leidvolle Erinnerungen die Gegenwart prägten.
